Special Olympians

Orchard Village started the Orchard Village Track and Field team in 2007 and has a dedicated team of coaches that volunteer every year. The events that our clients enjoy range from the softball throw, 500m dash to a 4 person relay race. The payoff for the hard work is the opportunity to “win gold” and go downstate to the summer games in Bloomington/Normal, Illinois. This multi-day event allows our clients the opportunity to compete, but also socialize. There is a dance and other fun activities that keep our clients talking about the trip for months after.

One summer, one of our very own clients, Stanley, was chosen as one of the torch bearers. Stanley takes much pride in his participation in Special Olympics; so much that he competes not only with Orchard Village but with the local Special Recreation district for basketball and softball in the fall/winter.

Fun fact: did you know that Special Olympics began in Illinois and that the first ever games were held in Soldier Field in July of 1968.
