Growing and Thriving

In 2013, Orchard Village proudly (and successfully!) planted for the first time an urban organic garden on its Skokie administrative campus. The quarter-acre “farm,” tended by staff, clients and volunteers, as well as professional management from The Talking Farm, has increased its yield each summer since, providing fresh produce to our client residences on what amounts to a weekly basis between June and September. An increasing yield, totaling more than 4,000 lbs, has also allowed Orchard Village to participate in the Skokie Farmers Market, where clients can gain experience managing the produce on display, addressing and interacting with customers and correctly closing cash transactions. The increased production has also allowed Orchard Village to give back. Over 1000 lbs of produce has been donated to the Niles Food Pantry each summer, giving our clients the pride and satisfaction of knowing their efforts are supporting others in need within the community we all share.
